Today, Leap Day, the forecast calls for snow, sleet, freezing rain -- generally disgusting weather. Yes, I know that it is winter after all and it is New England as well. But what's a person to believe it when the weather is such a tease? The answer is simple: my garden. My tomato seedlings offer hopes of summer's warmth and bounty.

Yes, there is a "but" in the form of a gigantic silver maple tree, known by the ironic moniker "Sliver," that has grown at the back of my property for as long as I've lived here. "Venerable" is an adjective that you might assign to an oak or even a Norway maple. Can't really think of adjectives for this one except "big," "shady," and "leafy." It's doing its job and I commend it for that. It's chowing down on lots 'o carbon dioxide every summer and reducing the temperature in our back yard and the rear of our house. And here's the "but." It's shading my garden.

Joe DiMaggio said of baseball's opening day, "You look forward to it like a birthday party when you're a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen." That pretty well says it for opening day in the garden -- after a long, cold winter, it's like a party, except with dirt and seeds instead of cake and ice cream. And, unlike baseball, whose fortunes are tossed on whimsy, you can be sure that something wonderful does happen in your garden!

This is serious winter weather that requires serious, winter survival food: oatmeal.
While rolled oats are readily available in a variety of shapes and forms (some of which are highly processed, sugar-laden, and should be avoided unless one is at risk of starvation) at your local grocery, the steel-cut variety will require just a bit of extra searching, and some advance planning when cooking. They are well worth the effort!

You could always count on opening your mailbox on January 2 and finding it filled with seed catalogs. Spring might be many months away, and the fizz of New Years champagne a fading memory, but now that you were armed with catalogs, you could do something! You could plan your summer garden and get ready to start some seedlings in a few weeks. If you haven’t enjoyed the pleasure of picking your own apples, you are missing a real treat. I’m very fortunate to live in an old farming community that still boasts many orchards, and most encourage pick your own. It’s a fun outing [...]

If you're not familiar with kale, give it a try. It is one of the healthiest vegetables around. High in fiber, it's been found to reduce cholesterol, reduce risk of at least five different types of cancer, and is off the chart in levels of vitamins K, A, C, manganese, and more. The very young leaves can accent a salad nicely, but the larger, older leaves can be a bit tough and need a long marinade to work in a salad, but make a great kale soup. I love to include kale in a mixed vegetable stir fry, or steam it and serve like spinach.
